Un journaliste de musique new-yorkais mène l’enquête sur la disparition, à la veille du coup d'État en 1976 en Argentine, de Francisco Tenório Jr, pianiste brésilien virtuose. Tout en célébrant le jazz et la Bossa Nova (João Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Vinicius de Moraes et Paulo Moura, le film capture une période éphémère de liberté créatrice, à un tournant de l’histoire de l'Amérique Latine dans les années 60 et 70, juste avant que le continent ne tombe sous le joug des régimes totalitaires.

Talent multi-facettes que celui de Fernando Trueba. Ancien journaliste de cinéma, il a une longue carrière de cinéaste puisque « They shot the piano player » est son dix-neuvième long-métrage en tant que réalisateur, et son second en animation. Scénariste, réalisateur, producteur de films et de musique, auteur, éditeur, il a remporté l’Oscar du Meilleur Film Étranger pour « Belle époque » en 1994, et reçu de nombreux prix à Berlin, aux Goyas (César espagnols), ainsi que des Grammys en tant que producteur de musique.

Javier Mariscal est un partenaire de longue date de Fernando Trueba, avec qui il partage un vif intérêt pour la musique, déjà très présente pour « Chico & Rita » en 2010. À la fois artiste, directeur artistique, graphiste, illustrateur, auteur de BD, designer, sculpteur, décorateur, il a souvent été exposé pour ses créations, que ce soit au Centre Pompidou à Paris ou au Musée du Design à Londres. Il est dessinateur, directeur artistique et coréalisateur de « They shot the piano player. »

A music journalist from New York City embarks on an adventure to discover the reason for the disappearance of a young Brazilian piano virtuoso, Francisco Tenório Jr, after a coup d’état in Argentina in 1976. Celebrating jazz and Bossa Nova, and music by João Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Vinicius de Moraes and Paulo Moura, the film captures an ephemeral period of creative freedom, at a turning point in Latin American history during the 60’s and 70’s, right before the continent fell under the iron fist of totalitarian regimes.

Fernando Trueba is a multi-faceted talent. A former film journalist, he has had a long career as a filmmaker: They Shot The Piano Player is his 19th feature film as a director, and his second that is animated. Also a screenwriter, director, film and music producer, author and editor, he won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film for Belle Epoque in 1994, and has received numerous awards in Berlin, the Goyas (Spanish Oscars) and Grammy Awards as a music producer.

Javier Mariscal is a long-standing creative partner of Fernando Trueba, with whom he shares a keen interest in music, as demonstrated in their earlier film Chico & Rita in 2010. An artist, art director, graphic designer, illustrator, comic book writer, designer, sculptor, and decorator, he has often exhibited his creations, from the Centre Pompidou in Paris to the Design Museum in London. He is the designer, art director, and co-director for They Shot The Piano Player.
