The Saint Barth Film Festival “Cinéma Caraïbes” is back after a two-year absence due to the Covid pandemic. On May 4-7, 2022, the festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary, which did not take place as planned in 2020, or again in 2021.
Four feature-length films are on the program for the 25th St Barth Film Festival, including two documentaries. The first two films will be shown on May 4 and 5 at AJOE in Lorient, while the films on May 6 and 7 will be shown on the dock in Gustavia, pending approval from the Collectivity.

Joanne Kilgour, John Isaacs et Natalie Rogers, trois artistes talentueux ayant tenu les rôles principaux dans la plupart des premières œuvres de Banyan, se retrouvent un après-midi, la veille du départ de John pour l'Université de New York. Il y rejoint Joanne et Natalie, qui viennent d'intégrer la Juilliard School.
Ils dansent, jouent la comédie, discutent et évoquent leurs souvenirs, leurs rêves et leurs expériences présentes, exprimant ce que signifie pour eux de partir étudier à l'étranger et comment cela modifie la perception de leur pays natal.
Un hommage énergique, drôle, touchant, profond et surtout divertissant à la jeunesse et aux talents des Caraïbes.
Partir… a été remasterisé et remonté, avec un épilogue inédit qui raconte où en sont les protagonistes aujourd'hui et ce qu'ils ont accompli.
Concert Dans la Foret Tropicale

En novembre 2000, l'explorateur britannique John Blashford Snell, désireux de satisfaire le souhait des Waiwai de posséder un instrument à clavier, transporta un piano à queue jusqu'à leur village, niché au cœur de la forêt tropicale guyanaise.
Depuis, le piano est resté inutilisé dans un coin de l'église du village.
En mai 2002, le cinéaste et militant culturel guyanais Michael Gilkes, accompagné d'une équipe comprenant le pianiste de concert international guyanais Ray Luck, l’accordeur de pianos Remington Ally et l'équipe de Banyan, se joignit aux Waiwai pour un concert de chants et de musique.
Adoptant un style qui reflète la discrétion et la réserve de la population Waiwai, « CONCERT DANS LA FORÊT TROPICALE » raconte comment des Guyanais ont pu redonner vie à l'instrument et à l'intégrer pleinement à la vie musicale des Waiwai.
La Mort Du Cygne
(2016, documentaire, Trinidad & Tobago, 10m)
Peter Minshall, artiste de carnaval trinidadien qui a occupé le poste de directeur artistique des cérémonies d’ouverture de trois Jeux Olympiques (Barcelone, Atlanta et Salt Lake City), a monté son premier spectacle de carnaval depuis près de dix ans et réinterprète le ballet classique de Mikhaïl Fokine « La Mort du Cygne » pour un « Moko Jumbie » (danseur sur échasses) en travesti. Ce film retrace la création et la représentation de ce mas lors du concours King of Carnival en février 2016.

La collection Banyan constitue la plus grande archive vidéo numérisée existante consacrée à la culture et à la société des Caraïbes. Ce film présente brièvement cette archive, qui compte 3 000 cassettes collectées pendant plus de 40 ans dans toute la région des Caraïbes, ainsi que sa portée et son intérêt en tant qu'outil de recherche et d’étude. La collection a récemment été acquise par le gouvernement de la Barbade. Cette acquisition garantit sa pérennité et permet un accès à l'échelle régionale.
Au cours des 50 dernières années, Christopher Laird a produit plus de 300 documentaires, fictions et autres productions vidéo avec Banyan Ltd., qui lui ont valu une multitude de prix nationaux, régionaux et internationaux.
Il a supervisé la création de la plus grande collection numérisée au monde de vidéos sur la culture caribéenne, conservée au sein des archives Banyan. En 2003, il a fondé, avec Errol Fabien, Gayelle, la première chaîne de télévision en clair entièrement consacrée aux Caraïbes. En 2009, il s'est vu décerner un doctorat honoris causa par l'Université des Indes occidentales. En 2024, il a reçu une distinction nationale des mains du président de Trinité-et-Tobago, la médaille Chaconia d'Or. Il a été intronisé au Panthéon de la Caribbean Broadcasting Union ainsi que par CaribbeanTales à Toronto, Candada.

Going Foreign

Joanne Kilgour, John Isaacs and Natalie Rogers, three talented performers who played lead roles in most of Banyan’s early dramas, meet one afternoon/evening on the eve of John going to New York University to study, joining Joanne and Natalie who have just started at Julliard.
They dance, role play, discuss and perform memory, dream and present experience, expressing what it means to them to have to go abroad ("Foreign") to study and how it changes their perception of home.
Energetic, hilarious, touching, serious and, above all, entertaining tribute to youth and Caribbean talent.
Going Foreign has been re-mastered and re-edited with an added EPILOGUE which tells the story of where the protagonists are now and what they have achieved.
Concert in the Rainforest

In November 2000, British explorer, John Blashford Snell, wishing to fulfil the desire of the Waiwai people for a keyboard instrument, transported a grand piano to their village deep in the rainforest of Guyana. Since then, the piano has remained largely unused in a corner of the village church.
In May 2002, Guyanese filmmaker and cultural activist, Michael Gilkes, led a team including Guyanese international concert pianist, Ray Luck, piano technician, Remington Ally, and the Banyan crew to join the Waiwai in a concert of song and music.
With an engaging style that reflects the quiet observant reserve of the Waiwai, Concert in the Rainforest documents this opportunity grasped by fellow Guyanese to rehabilitate the instrument and integrate it more usefully into the musical life of the Waiwai.
The Dying Swan

Trinidadian carnival artist Peter Minshall, who has been the artistic director for the opening ceremonies of three Olympic Games—Barcelona, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City—produced his first carnival in nearly ten years, and reinterprets Mikhail Fokine’s classic ballet The Dying Swan for a ‘Moko Jumbie’ (a stilt dancer) in drag. This film chronicles the assemblage and performance of this mas at the King of Carnival competition in February 2016.

The Banyan Collection is the largest digitized video archive of Caribbean culture and society in existence. This film is a brief description of this archive of 3,000 videos collected over 40 years all over the Caribbean region, its scope, and value as a tool for research and study. The collection was recently acquired by the Government of Barbados. Its acquisition ensures it longevity and provides regional access.
Christopher Laird has produced over 300 documentaries, dramas, and other video productions with Banyan Ltd. over the past 50 years, garnering a score of national, regional, and international awards.
He has overseen the establishment of the world’s largest digitised collection of Caribbean culture on video in the Banyan Archive. In 2003 he founded, with Errol Fabien, the region’s first all Caribbean free to air television station, Gayelle. In 2009 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of the West Indies. In 2024 he was awarded a National Award by the President of Trinidad & Tobago, The Chaconia Medal, Gold. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Caribbean Broadcasting Union and also by CaribbeanTales in Toronto, Canada.
