Building on a Tradition

The St. Barth Film Festival/Cinéma Caraïbe celebrates its 17th season, April 25-30, 2012, offering the population of St. Barthélemy the chance to discover films and filmmakers from the Caribbean basin. Festival guests include filmmakers, producers, and cinema professionals from around the world who have a strong interest in Caribbean film and culture.

This year, our films focus on two Caribbean islands: Cuba and Guadeloupe. Cuba has the largest film industry in the Caribbean, and we are pleased to present Soy del Son a la Salsa, a wonderful music documentary, Scent of Oak, a classic historical drama; and Chico and Rita, an exciting new animated feature for adults, a musical love story with a fabulous soundtrack, which was nominated for an Oscar this year.

If Cuba is the traditional center of Caribbean film production, Guadeloupe is rapidly emerging as a serious film center in its own right. Our films from or about Guadeloupe include Elza, by Mariette Monpierre; and a series of documentaries including Nou Yorkers by Janluk Stanislas; Fan Do Brasil by Steve and Stephanie James; Marie-Galante: The Bitter Taste of Sugar by Cedric Robion.

In expanding our focus with “an eye on the world,” we plan to showcase international films nominated for an Academy Award. We are excited to inaugurate the series with The Artist, a film that won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor!

We would also like to salute Yves Greaux, former cultural attaché for the Collectivity of St. Barthélemy, who has been a long time friend and benefactor. His unwavering support of our vision has sustained us over the past 16 years.

Once again, we are excitied to be working with Jean-Marc Césaire of Ciné Woulé, closing the festival with a giant screen on the beach in Flamands on Monday, April 30. 

Continuing in another tradition, we will also show selections from the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase, a UNESCO sponsored series of films from around the entire region that ties in perfectly with our vision. Please join us on our cinematic journey.

Le St Barth Film Festival/Cinéma Caraïbe fête sa 17ème saison du 25 au 30 avril 2012 et continue à offrir à la population de St. Barthélemy la chance de découvrir des films et réalisateurs du bassin caribéen. Les invités du festival sont des réalisateurs, producteurs et professionnels du cinéma ayant un grand intérêt pour le cinéma et la culture caraïbe.

Cette année, nos films se concentrent sur deux îles de la Caraïbe: Cuba et la Guadeloupe. Cuba a la plus grande industrie cinématographique de la Caraïbe et nous sommes heureux de présenter Soy del Son a la Salsa, un merveilleux documentaire musical, Scent of Oak/Roble de Olor/L’Odeur du chêne, un drame historique classique et Chico et Rita, un passionnant nouveau long métrage d’animation pour adultes, histoire d’amour musicale avec une bande son fabuleuse, qui a été nominé pour un Oscar cette année.

Si Cuba est le centre traditionnel de la production cinématographique de la Caraïbe, la Guadeloupe émerge rapidement comme un sérieux centre cinématographique à part entière. Nos films de et sur la Guadeloupe incluent Elza de Mariette Monpierre et une série de documentaires tels Nou Yorkers de Janluk Stanislas, Fan Do Brasil de Steve et Stephanie James, Marie-Galante: Le Gôut amer du Sucre de Cédric Robion, parmi d’autres.

En élargissant notre champ d’intérêt avec «un œil sur le monde», nous envisageons de présenter des films internationaux nominés pour un Academy Award. Nous sommes très heureux d’inaugurer la série avec L’Artiste, un film qui a remporté les Oscars du meilleur film, du meilleur réalisateur et du meilleur acteur!

Nous aimerions aussi saluer Yves Gréaux, ancien attaché culturel de la Collectivité de St. Barthélemy, qui a longtemps été un ami et bienfaiteur. Son fidèle soutien à notre vision nous a permis d’exister pendant plus de 16 ans.

Une fois encore, nous sommes ravis de travailler avec Jean-Marc Césaire de Ciné Woulé, pour la clôture du festival avec l’installation d’un écran géant sur la plage de Flamands le lundi 30 avril.

Continuant une autre tradition, nous montrerons aussi des sélections de la Présentation Itinérante du Cinéma de la Caraïbe, une série de films provenant de toute la région, sponsorisée par l’UNESCO, qui s’associe parfaitement à notre vision. Rejoignez-nous dans ce voyage cinématographique.
