From Havana to Port au Prince, Pointe-à-Pitre, Port of Spain, and Beyond: The impact of Cuba on Caribbean Cinema

2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution as well as the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Cuban Institute Cinematografic Arts, ICAIC, which transformed filmmaking in the Caribbean basin.

A milestone in world history and perhaps a watershed year for the Cuban people as US president Barack Obama has started opening doors that have been closed for 50 years. Rather than present a retrospective of Cuban cinema, we opted to show a series of films that look at Cuba through the eyes of international filmmakers, as well as discuss the influence of Cuban cinema on filmmakers throughout the Caribbean, and the world.

We are also pleased to present selections from the second traveling exhibition of Caribbean Cinema, this time focusing on films for children of all ages, along with some wonderful films on music from Trinidad to Portugal, documentaries about Haiti, Anguilla, Les Saintes, a series of experimental/art films, and the short films from One Short One Movie made in Guadeloupe.

Please join us on a journey that leads from Cuba to Saint Barth by the way of 25 films — shorts and features, documentary and fiction — as the 14th annual St. Barth Film Festival once again invites you to share in the magic of the silver screen.

De La Havane à Port-au-Prince, Pointe à Pitre, Port of Spain, et au-delà : L’impact de Cuba sur le Cinéma Caribéens

2009 marque le 50ème anniversaire de la Révolution cubaine ainsi que le 50ème anniversaire de la création d’ICAIC, Institut Cubain des Arts et de l’Industrie Cinématographique, qui a transformé la réalisation cinématographique dans le bassin caribéen.

Un événement marquant dans l’histoire mondiale et peut-être une année de grand changement pour le peuple cubain qui voit le Président américain Barack Obama commencer à ouvrir des portes qui avaient été fermées pendant 50 ans. Plutôt que de présenter une rétrospective du Cinéma Cubain, nous avons préféré présenter une série de films qui montre Cuba à travers le regard de réalisateurs internationaux, et aussi discuter de l’influence que le cinéma cubain a et a eu sur les réalisateurs de la Caraïbe et du monde.

Nous sommes aussi heureux de présenter entre autres une sélection extraite de la Deuxième Présentation Itinérante du Cinéma Caribéen, cette fois en s’intéressant aux films pour enfants de tous ages, mais aussi de merveilleux films musicaux de Trinidad au Portugal, des documentaires sur Haïti, Anguilla, Les Saintes, une série de films expérimentaux, et des court métrages tiré de One Short One Movie réalisé en Guadeloupe. Rejoignez-nous pour un voyage qui nous mène de Cuba à Saint Barth par le biais de 25 films, courts et longs métrages, documentaire et fiction, lors de ce 14ème St Barth Film Festival qui une fois encore vous invite à vivre et partager la magie du grand écran.
