This year we are excited to host selections of the Traveling Caribbean Film Showcase. The showcase is sponsored by UNESCO, and supported by the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The Showcase is a 12-week itinerant Caribbean film festival bringing together film-makers from over 15 countries to showcase short films and documentaries produced in the Caribbean.
The full program consists of more than 30 hours of regionally produced feature films, documentaries and cartoons on Caribbean peoples, issues and culture. The films are all subtitled in English, Spanish, French and French Creole, and are expected to promote Caribbean cultural identity, raise awareness of persons to the potential of the Caribbean filmmaking industry, and contribute to the preservation of Caribbean media in all its diversity.
We are proud to host the noted professor and Haitian scholar Frantz Voltaire who will present the Port au Prince, Ma Ville and preside over a round table on Caribbean film.
Special Guests / Les invités
PABLO TRAPERO
An important figure in contemporary Latin American cinema, writer/producer/director Pablo Trapero could be considered as the flip side to the aesthetic and narrative bravado of recent international successes such as Amores Perros, Y tu Mama Tambien, and City of God. Preferring a documentary realist style and an unhurried storytelling pace, Trapero's films are slow-burning but entertaining character studies set in a politically turbulent Argentina . His impressive debut, Crane World tackles issues concerning unemployment and economic problems, while his follow-up El Bonaerense follows a gormless locksmith and part time crook as he joins the police force and discovers a world of corruption, violence, and blatant disregard.
Trapero's latest offering, Familia Rodante , is a beautifully tempered comedy that preys on many people's worst nightmares - the family get-together.
GUILLERMO DEL TORO
Guillermo del Toro is part of a wave of Mexican filmmakers that have made an indelible mark upon American cinema in recent years. Along with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Alfonso Cuaron and Pedro Almodovar, del Toro has attained a remarkable level of critical and box office success in an environment not exactly conducive to international filmmaking
A film prodigy dedicated to Latin American cinema even as his success gave him a ticket to Hollywood, Guillermo del Toro earned a place as one of Time magazine's 50 Young Leaders for the New Millennium before he made his third film.
In 2007 Pan’s Labyrinth won Academy Awards for for Achievements in Cinematography, Makeup, and Art Direction.

A Note from the Directors
Family LIfe
Over the past 12 years we have shown films covering many aspects of the Caribbean experience, films focusing on music, culture, history, political oppression and social dramas. This year we look at family life from a number of perspectives. Familia Rodante, Sadaude do Futuro, and Adolfo all examine ordinary people struggling to work out the basic challenges of family bonds and daily life in Argentina, Sao Paulo and Havana. Pan’s Labyrinth takes the ordinary and turns it inside out, using a child’s imagination to confront the horrors of civil war. And the documentary, De Mémoire d’Anciens, takes us back in time via personal memories of life in Saint Barth before the advent of tourism.
On a final note, we would like to dedicate this festival to one of the great voices of Caribbean film, Perry Henzell. Perry’s first film, The Harder They Come, introduced Jimmy Cliff and Reggae music to North America. A staple of world cinema since its debut in 1972, the film is being re-released in the United States this year. After many years of struggle, Perry had just released the sequel to The Harder They Come, before dying this past year. We were proud to show The Harder They Come at our first festival in 1996. We are just as proud to show it again this year in a 35th anniversary screening.
